{"id":2723,"date":"2014-12-01T16:32:41","date_gmt":"2014-12-01T16:32:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/staging.oddbee.com\/canopy-labs\/?p=2723"},"modified":"2018-06-05T13:25:29","modified_gmt":"2018-06-05T17:25:29","slug":"retailers-black-friday-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.oddbee.com\/canopy-labs\/retailers-black-friday-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"How Retailers Fared on Black Friday 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2734\" src=\"http:\/\/staging.oddbee.com\/canopy-labs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Best_Buy_Outage.png\" alt=\"Best_Buy_Outage\" width=\"1171\" height=\"598\" \/>\n<p>It seems that starting holiday sales <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/money\/3551299\/black-friday-sales-halloween-early-christmas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as early as November 1st<\/a>\u00a0has taken some of the excitement of Black Friday away from consumers.<\/p>\n<p>According to the National Retail Federation, U.S. consumer spending\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2014-11-30\/u-s-consumers-reduce-spending-by-11-over-thanksgiving-weekend.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fell by 11%<\/a>\u00a0this Thanksgiving weekend, with 2014&#8217;s $50.9 billion down from $57.4 billion in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>While brick-and-mortar stores battled with\u00a0declines\u00a0in store traffic and revenue, eCommerce sales <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comscore.com\/Insights\/Press-Releases\/2014\/11\/Thanksgiving-and-Black-Friday-See-Online-Buying-Bonanza-as-Both-Days-Surpass-1-Billion-in-Desktop-Spending\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grew by\u00a015-30% this year<\/a>, with both Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday generating\u00a0over $1 billion in U.S. online sales for the first time. Here at Canopy Labs, many\u00a0of our eCommerce customers saw a 3-8x increase in sales over the Thanksgiving weekend.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2732\" src=\"http:\/\/staging.oddbee.com\/canopy-labs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Black-Friday-Sales-2014.png\" alt=\"Black Friday Sales 2014\" width=\"940\" height=\"484\" \/>\n<p>Last week, we profiled <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.oddbee.com\/canopy-labs\/blog\/history-of-cyber-monday-website-outages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">major website outages<\/a>\u00a0from the Black Fridays and Cyber Mondays of past years, and 2014\u00a0was no exception. This year, Best Buy&#8217;s website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.retaildive.com\/news\/best-buy-website-crashes-twice-over-shopping-weekend\/338318\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crashed on two separate occasions<\/a> on Black Friday, with outages lasting nearly two hours during the critical morning shopping period. HP and Nike <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/web\/best-buy-tech-blunder-site-suffers-outages-black-friday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also experienced website crashes<\/a>\u00a0from heavy\u00a0web traffic and demand.<\/p>\n<p>In the UK, major retailers such as Tesco, John Lewis, TopShop, Currys, and PC World all experienced\u00a0website performance issues as well. John Lewis estimates that 7% of visitors had difficulties accessing the site, while Currys customers were stuck waiting in online checkout <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-30242124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for more than an hour<\/a>\u00a0at times.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a slow start on\u00a0Thanksgiving, the National Retail Federation is <a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2014\/11\/30\/black-friday-weekend-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">still projecting a 4.1% increase<\/a> in overall U.S.\u00a0spending for the holiday season.
